Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Doula if I'm getting induced?
Yes!!!
Did you know one study showed that without a doula the C-section rate was as high as 58.8% but WITH a doula, it was reduced to 12.5%?!
That is a HUGE difference!
How, you might ask?
Because doulas understand the importance of movement during induction and that you can not stay stuck on your back. They also help you with prenatal education to know WHEN interventions are medically necessary and when they are NOT, as MANY C-sections are done for "Failure to Progress" or are actually instigated by a cascade of interventions which were risked just to speed things up! Also, inductions can go on for a couple of days! Your support person can get too burnt out if they can't take breaks or rest. You need their batteries to be charged so after you have the baby, YOU can rest and they can be more mentally, emotionally, & physically there for you & your newborn!
Lastly, doulas can help you avoid inductions all together that are NOT medically necessary!
Do I need a doula if I'm planning to get an Epidural?
Yes!!!
Doulas can help you manage and cope through labor longer so you can get an epidural once active labor is well established! If a laboring mama doesn't have any help managing her pain she is likely to get an epidural too early which can stall labor by shutting down natural oxytocin or cause malpresentation (which means baby is stuck in weird position) because usually mom is stuck on her back after her epidural. Doulas are there to make sure you are not stuck on your back. We implement tools like the Peanut ball to do a "rolling epidural" and understand "Pelvic Biomechanics" and simple position changes that work for your unique progress or baby's station.
Also, beyond getting an epidural, a Doula is there for YOU throughout labor for informational & emotional support. We advocate for you! We are there to serve you & your partner.
Do I need a doula for a scheduled C-section?
Yes!!!
There are many birth choices for you and your baby during a c-section. Doulas can help you create a perinatal plan and know exactly what to expect on your big day.
We can be with you before the birth and make sure you have everything you need to be supported in your postpartum recovery. Also, if you are being scheduled a c-section but want to consider your options for a VBAC, we can definitely help you have all the facts and feel prepared mentally, emotionally, & physically.
